As you uncover caves, castles, cities and much more besides they'll populate your map - opening them for fast-travel, which is an essential to navigate such a giant landscape and finish off missions. Even now, Skyrim's map is so large that you'll need to scroll around it - and that's excluding the interior maps and additional off-map areas beyond. When the game was first released there was nothing on such a scale. Sure, there are still some quirks - crockery dances about on tables for no reason, the repeat voice acting is unintentionally amusing, and the mechanics can feel dated (combat in particular) - but the vastness of this world will quickly preoccupy your consciousness and appetite to discover more to finish yet another quest. It's not nostalgia, it's simply an in-depth fantasy title done the right way. A decade on it proves why it was a classic then and is, in many respects, even more of one now. But dig into Skyrim's Anniversary Edition for a few small hours and you'll quickly end up losing a full few weeks or more to its charms.Īt launch back in 2011 Skyrim was a landmark role-playing game. You might shrug off a 10-year-old title as old hat. Obviously a lot has happened in the world of gaming since (and we've also grown more grey hairs), so can a classic title find new life beyond the nostalgia? Well, Skyrim is a classic for a reason. Yup, two whole console generations back, or umpteen PC graphics cards.
